Kazakhstan president proposes reversal of democratic reforms: Independent candidacy at risk; senate may be scrapped September 08, 2025 at 01:42AM

President Tokayev of Kazakhstan has proposed reversing key political reforms implemented after the 2022 unrest, potentially strengthening the ruling Amanat party. The proposed changes include scrapping independent candidates and abolishing the upper house, shifting back to a party-list system and unicameral legislature. These reforms, introduced after deadly protests, will undergo consultation before a 2027 referendum.
