Omicron spreads, cases detected in Netherlands, Denmark, Australia November 28, 2021 at 03:15PM
Omicron kept spreading around the world on Sunday, with 13 cases found in the Netherlands and two each in Denmark and Australia even as more countries imposed travel restriction. Dutch health authorities said the 13 cases of the variant were found among people on two flights from South Africa to Amsterdam on Friday. Authorities had tested all of over 600 passengers on the two flights and had found 61 Covid cases.

At a time when a new variant has led to restrictions on travellers from South Africa and other African nations, many western courtries are seeing a surge in Covid cases despite a larger propottion of their population being fully vaccinated with Germany, US and the UK reporting more than 50,000 Covid cases daily, according to the John Hopkins university Covid resource centre. The highest 65,584 cases were reported by Germany on Saturday.

Warning about a "colossal" Covid-19 outbreak, a new study by the Chinese mathematicians has advised against dropping the country's zero-tolerance policies by lifting travel curbs. China could not afford to lift travel restrictions without more efficient vaccinations or specific treatments, said Peking University mathematicians, in the report published in China CDC Weekly by the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.
