Detainees in El Salvador's gang crackdown cite abuse during months in jail November 30, 2023 at 11:22PM
Luis, a baker, was arrested while trying to get a document attesting to his clean criminal history at a government office. He was accused of being associated with gang members and was taken to El Salvador's largest prison. During his time in prison, he experienced severe abuse and feared for his life. Human rights organisations have documented multiple deaths and cases of violence in the prison. He was eventually released, but his prospects have been limited.
Russian court extends pre-trial detention of US journalist until February 5 November 30, 2023 at 11:07PM
The detention of Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva has been extended by a Russia court. She is awaiting trial for failing to register as a "foreign agent". RFE/RL, the organization she works for, is funded by the US Congress and designated as a foreign agent by Russia. Kurmasheva is a US citizen and her right to consular access should be granted. She holds both US and Russian passports and entered Russia for a family emergency. She is facing charges of failure to register as a foreign agent and espionage.
