Hong Kong was under UK jurisdiction until its handover to China in 1997 with a guarantee that Beijing would preserve the city's judicial and legislative autonomy for 50 years. The British offer covered almost three million Hong Kongers who either have a British National Overseas passports or are eligible to apply for one.
